To the beginners in the sport, stop modifying your car and get seat time. Make it out to as many events as you can and enjoy pushing your car and yourself to the limits. Dont be afraid to ask anyone at these events any questions. In my years of doing this, Ive learned the vast majority of people love talking about this sport, teaching the new guys and showing them the ropes, and absolutely love talking about their own cars and mods. Getting involved will make each and every event many times more enjoyable and also allow for some great, friendly competition.

Advice To Newcomers: Read up a little – I really like Ross Bentley’s “Winning Autocross Techniques”. The cliches you’ll hear the experienced guys use really are true: smooth is fast; slow in, fast out; eyes up/look way out ahead. The hard part is getting a grip on what the words really mean and why it’s faster, but one day it’ll just click and the fun really begins! Invest in yourself first then the car. Go to AX School with NCC BMWCCA, SCCA or EVO (once you have a little experience). Take advantage of Test and Tunes to get a phenomenal amount of seat time. Get a committee member to ride shotgun with you and really listen to what they say. Ask to ride with them (preferably in the afternoon during non-competition runs, please). We all want to help you go faster – it raises everyone’s game and makes it even more fun all around.
